The Swedish Rug Collection

Swedish Tree

Circa 1972

This 4'0" x 5'0" pictorial rug has one of the most charming designs we've ever seen. It was made in 1972 by Marianne Richter (1916-2010), an innovator in original Rya patterns inspired in part by her love of artists like Picasso and Paul Klee. Richter worked as a textile designer for Marta Maas Fjetterstron (MMF) at her workshop in Bastad in Sweden. Both MMF and MR have the most prestigious reputations within a core group of Scandinavian textile designers. The color composition and construction is complex. From a distance you see a green field, but upon close examination there are possibly thirty shades of color blended into the fabric. The result isn't a uniform, static coloration but subtle nuances that can change depending on where you’re standing or the time and light of day. Word on the street is that only a handful of these rugs were ever made (although nobody we spoke to had ever seen another one like it).
